To understand the show, you have to accept the premise of the pilot. Ted Lawson, a robotics engineer, creates a humanoid robot named VICI (Voice Input Child Identicant). To hide his invention from competitors—and for reasons the show never truly bothers to justify—he brings the robot home to live as a family member.

The pilot episode. Ted brings Vicki home in a large box. Jamie is thrilled to have a "sister" who can do his homework, but Joan is horrified. The Hindi dubbing handles the tension perfectly as Joan tries to throw Vicki out, only for Vicki to call her "Mom" for the first time. Dialogue to remember: "Maa, aap kyun pareshan ho rahi hain?"

Season 1 is the purest distillation of this concept. Unlike later seasons where the show drifted into standard sitcom tropes, the first season was obsessed with the mechanics of the lie. The plotlines were repetitive but comforting: Vicki lifts the couch with one hand; Vicki speaks in a monotone, robotic voice; Vicki malfunctions.
