Canon releases different versions of the Service Tool for different printer generations. The V3600 version is specifically designed for newer Canon PIXMA series printers, including (but not limited to):

The Canon Service Tool cannot communicate with a printer in its normal "Ready" state. You must manually trigger "Service Mode" on the hardware itself before launching the software. While the button sequence varies slightly by model, the general process is as follows: Turn off the printer but keep it plugged into power. Press and hold the Stop/Reset button.
