The real star of the show is, of course, the visual effects. Emmerich's trademark flair for destruction is on full display, with stunning depictions of cities being razed, massive spaceships clashing, and even a heroic dogfight or two. The climax is particularly breathtaking, with a thrilling showdown between humanity's best and the alien threat.
Principal photography took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico (standing in for the ESD base), and at Gold Coast, Australia (for the mothership interior).
