The story follows Anna, a Sicilian single mother who marries Fosco, an older, crude truck driver. They move to his home in Tuscany along with Anna's infant daughter. Fosco, who secretly robs ancient Etruscan graves to sell relics, is eventually arrested and imprisoned.
