Roland Emmerich, known for his work on Independence Day and Stargate, was brought on board to direct the film. Emmerich's vision for Godzilla was to create a more contemporary, action-oriented take on the character. The film was produced on a budget of approximately $100 million and was released on May 20, 1998.
