The VI (Virtual Interface) Stereo to 5.1 Converter Suite is a software package designed to intelligently upmix stereo sources into 5.1 channel surround sound. Unlike basic "expanders," this suite utilizes specific matrix algorithms to separate the audio into distinct frequency bands and spatial positions.

At the core of the suite is the Unwrapping Engine. Unlike basic panning spreads that simply push sounds to the sides, this engine "unfolds" the stereo image. It ensures that center-channel information—typically vocals, dialogue, and lead instruments—remains anchored in the center speaker, while atmospheric elements like reverb, cymbals, and background pads are pushed to the surrounds. This creates a natural hemisphere of sound that wraps around the listener.
