The movie takes place a year after the events of "Batman Begins." Batman is struggling to maintain order in Gotham City, and a new villain emerges in the form of the Joker (Heath Ledger). The Joker wreaks havoc on the city, robbing banks and destroying infrastructure. Batman, along with Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), must stop the Joker and restore peace to Gotham.

Nolan's vision for "The Dark Knight" was ambitious, and he assembled a talented team to bring his ideas to life.
